Generally back up systems todays widely use tape technology. This technology is not always easy to use. You must have a tape or a disk handy. The back up device must be ready to use. You have to verify the tape after data have been written onto the tape. The file transfer speed is a major issue for an online back-up system. xDSL or cable allows you to reach a comfortable speed but what about files larger than 10Mb? An Outlook (.pst file) containing all your emails, contacts and agenda may easily grow larger than 400Mb. It might take more than 6 hours to transfer a 400Mb file at the average xDSL rate of 128Kbps. OSiDiS offers a technology specifically designed to overcome this problem. It uses the RSync algorithm that transfers only the minimum. After a sofisticated calculation, only the data that have been modified since the last back up will actually be transfered. This usually reduces the amount of traffic through the internet line to an average of 2% of the total traffic that would have otherwise been required. |
